This nostalgic and fascinating collection of art and artifacts from the past century is sure to evoke memories of years gone by. This will be a major attraction at the Antiques for Everyone fair at the NEC, Birmingham from 30 Oct - 2 Nov 2008. Antiques for Everyone is Britain s largest vetted and datelined antiques fair featuring more than 350 exhibitors from across the UK, Europe and America. With art and antiques on sale from less than £10 to more than £100,000, it is a major international event for collectors and dealers.

We are especially pleased to show a number of rare exhibits from the collection of Maurice Collins, the well-known author, gadget collector and friend of Antiques for Everyone. Maurice has assembled a fascinating display with all kinds of rare and mind-bending gadgets. Look out for these essential accessories from yesteryear as proof, it were needed, that there is nothing new in today’s high-tech world!

A ‘LAST DROP’ INK BOTTLE c1880
Ink was an expensive item back in the Victorian period but the stick pens needed to be immersed some way to get the full benefit when writing, this bottle could be stood in a different position to get the last drop

A SCIENTIFIC SHOULDER MEASURER c1934
To get the exact slope of the shoulder this would be placed on the customers shoulder by the tailor, the bubble then indicates how the exact cut should be made!

ANTITANNIC TEA INFUSER c1880
Precursor to the teabag this nifty patent claimed to produce purity & simplicity. You put the device into the cup, fill with boiling water, place a teaspoonful of tea, cover with lid and let it stand for 3 minutes

SOAP SAVER c1880
Soap was an expensive commodity; the bits that were unusable would have been fitted on the clip end of this tool, and used whilst stirring the washing in the tub to become the cleansing agent!

FINGER POWERED FAN c1925
This was a simple method of keeping cool instead of using the normal ‘waving’ fan. The power is from a constant pressing of the side lever which causes the blades to spin and keep the cool air on your face!

FINGER POWERED SHAVER c1935
Just a constant pulling of the trigger allows the head to vibrate to give you that near perfect shave. It could possibly be used in areas of the world where there is little electric power!

FOOD CHOPPER AND GRATER c1900
The three blades that raise and fall on the turn of the wheel chops the contents, fruit or vegetables into fine pieces, the grater on the edge finishes the job if an even finer product is required!

WAFER PAPERS FOR MEDICINE c1890
For easy administration of ‘nauseous medicines’ you would wrap the pill into one of these wafer papers and just swallow, the paper would melt and the pill will restore you to health!

COMB STROP c1920
"A clean comb is a healthy head" so claims the outer box of this strange looking item. Nits were a major problem 90 years ago, this made sure that the next user of the comb didn't receive unwelcome guests!
